White-tailed Eagle photographing season: 1.11 – 31.12. and 15.3. – 10.5.
Golden Eagle photographing season: 1.11.- 30.4.
General information: The hides are situated in the vicinity of the Russian border. At best the site is daily visited by five Golden Eagles, and at the beginning of April, up to ten White-tailed Eagles have been sighted at the site. The open scenery makes the site especially suitable for photographing the Eagles in flight. In addition to the Eagles, the confiding Ravens can also be photographed, as well as the occasional Goshawk and Wolverine. The feeding site was started in 2010.
Hide information: There are two professional hides and capacity is 9 photographers at the same time. Everyone has one shooting hole per person. Naturally, if the hides are not full one can use two shooting holes. Cameras can be attached to tripod heads, which are tightened on a wooden plank. Tripods cannot be used. The hides are equipped with an outdoor toilet, heater and sleeping bags for overnighters.
Photo session: 6-10 hours. Arrival at the hide in the dark is not compulsory. During the photographing session is not allowed to come out of the hide!
Location: 45 minutes by car from the center of Kuusamo and a 400-meter walk.
Weather: In January-February winter can be harsh with temperatures dropping below -25 C. First snow usually comes in October and melts away in May, so there should be snow on the ground at all times during the photography season.
Clothing: Warm winter boots and jacket recommended. In case you don’t have your own we can borrow you proper boots and warm winter overalls.
Distance to subjects: 20m to the eagles on the bait and 40-50m to the perching trees.
Recommended lenses: 100-400mm zoom lenses or 300-600mm telephoto lenses + possible extenders.
Mobile phone coverage: Yes
Prices: 170 euros/person/day. Snow mobile transportation 50 euros/way (max. 3 person). First photographing session requires orientation 100 euros.
